Summer Club Finals 2022

Dorchester Bowls club held their Club Competition Finals across the three days of the August Bank Holiday and were blessed with dry, bright weather allowing many brilliant, competitive matches to be played in front of an attentive crowd. Both the Ladies and Men’s Singles competitions were won by players who hadn’t previously been the Club Champion. Alexander Wilson produced a superb performance to beat Steve Wilsher 21-9 in the Men’s Final and Val Wright battled hard against Val Cornick to eventually win well 21-14 in the Ladies event. However, both beaten finalists gained ample consolation for these defeats in other matches. Val Cornick gained revenge for her Singles defeat as Cornick and Val Wright met again in the Ladies Sets Final with Cornick coming out on top 2-0 after an excellent match. Cornick was also crowned Ladies Two-Wood singles champion without playing as her opponent, Sue Lofthouse, was unable to play due to ill-health.

Willsher had a brilliant week-end, winning no less than four competitions. Willsher was successful in two singles finals defeating Ken Whately 21-17 in the Men’s Veteran’s Singles and finishing with a 21-14 success against Graham Cockett in the Men’s Handicap Singles. Willsher then teamed up with Peter Hinds to gain a fairly comfortable win, 26-13, over Geoff Webber and John Saunders in the Drawn Mens Pairs and partnered Isobel Calway to victory 29-21 playing Sylvia Lawley and John Saunders in the Drawn Mixed Pairs. After these two defeats, Saunders was delighted when he led Roger Dobbs and Tom Baldwin to victory in the Men’s Drawn Triples, gaining a 17-11 win over Frank Gwatkin, Roy Fowler and George Aslett. In the Ladies Drawn Triples, Annie Baldwin, Maureen Jones and Margaret Cullip pulled away from Isobel Calway, Shirley Bowley and Judith King in the latter stages to win well 23-11. Cullip and Jones teamed up successfully again in the Ladies Drawn Pairs with a fine 26-17 success against Teresa Jeanes and Carol Baker. Jeanes also contested the Mixed Pairs Final along with husband Barry against Liz and Ken Whately. This match produced a thrilling finish when the Jeanes scored three shots in the final end to snatch victory away from the Whatelys 23-22. In the Australian Pairs, Peter Hinds and Bill Ford teamed up to win 19-12 in a tight contest with Mike Lay and John Noble.

The remaining Singles finals produced some thrilling finishes with Shirley Bowley just making up her handicap deficit to edge home 21-20 against Helen Lannon in the Ladies Handicap Singles and Graham Cockett closing out the Men’s Two Wood Singles 14-11 in the penultimate end playing Bill Ford. The Ladies Veteran Singles saw a comfortable victory for Barbara Smith, 21-6, against Carol Baker and Jamie Roe had a similar result in the Open Singles as he finished 21-3 ahead of Malcolm Rendell. The prolific Ged Costello picked up another trophy where he played well to see off a strong challenge by Phil Lannon in the Men’s Set’s Singles, 2-0.

Meanwhile, inside on Dorchester’s excellent rinks, the Indoor Summer Finals were taking place.

The Open Singles was won by Hazel Ryan, with a fine performance giving Ryan a 21-11 margin over Frank Gwatkin and the Novice Singles saw Alan Griffin scrape home 21-19 against Steve Clover after a highly competitive final. In the Indoor Triples matches, the Open final saw victory go to Steve Barrett, Debbie Talbot and Nick Allen who defeated Claire Edwards, Syd Johnson and Brian Paulson 20-17 and the novice event was won by Joyce Perry, Mike Porter and Mike Gratwick with a 23-10 success playing Rose Butler, Margaret Johnson and Jon White. In the Open Pairs, the experienced Jenny Trotman and Frank Gwatkin teamed up to win comfortably, 31-10, playing Tim Lamb and Keith Kellaway.
